When sex becomes painful…

Millions of women experience pain before, during, or after sexual intercourse - a condition called dyspareunia (pronounced dis-pah-ROO-nee-uh; from the Greek dyspareunos, meaning "badly mated"). This condition not only saps sexual desire and enjoyment, it can also strain relationships and erode quality of life in general.

This can happen at any age, but it's particularly common among women who've reached menopause. Studies and surveys suggest that one-quarter to one-half of postmenopausal women experience some pain during sex.

The pain can range from mild to excruciating, and it is described as burning, stinging, sharpness, or extreme tenderness.

Depending on its cause, pain may be located in the outer genitals (vulva), within the vaginal canal, or deep in the pelvis. Many women feel discomfort mainly in the vestibule, the nerve-rich area surrounding the vaginal opening.

Dyspareunia can start suddenly or develop gradually. Pain may occur every time with sex, or only occasionally. For some women, simply thinking about intercourse can start a cycle of tightness, pain, and avoidance of sex.

A primer on female genitalia

The term vagina is commonly used to describe the entire female genitalia, but it is important to know its various parts, some of which are internal, and others that are external.

The internal part is the vaginal canal (the vagina proper) is an elastic, muscular canal with a soft, flexible lining. It connects the uterus with the external parts.

The external part of the vagina is called the vulva, and consists of several structures. The outer lips of the vulva are called labia majora and are a fold that contains fat to help cushion the area. Inside the labia majora are the thinner flaps of skin called the labia minora, which join at the top to enclose the clitoris.

The area between the labia minora, the vestibule, contains the openings to the urethra and the vaginal canal.

What are the causes of vaginal discomfort?

The most common cause of the problem in mature women are hormonal changes. When ovarian production of estrogen declines at menopause, vaginal tissue may become thinner, less lubricated, and less elastic. Eventually these changes can result in vaginal dryness, burning, itching, and pain.

However, premenopausal women may also suffer. The most common condition is vestibulodynia: a chronic pain syndrome affecting the vestibule (the vestibule is part of the vulva or external vaginal area, between the labia).

Any kind of touch or pressure—not only from penetration but even from a tampon, cotton swab, tight jeans, or toilet tissue—can trigger discomfort. The condition appears to have several different causes, but is not well understood.

Vestibulodynia has been recently found to be very common in postmenopausal women as well.

For women of any age, reduced sexual activity as well as medications such as antihistamines can contribute to vaginal dryness.

Less frequent causes of pain with intercourse include: skin diseases in the genital area, such as eczema and psoriasis; conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, bladder prolapse, and infections of the urinary tract, vagina, or reproductive organs; certain cancer treatments; injury to the pelvic area from childbirth; reconstructive surgery; damage to the pudendal nerve, among others.

Psychological or emotional factors may be involved. Stress, anxiety, depression, guilt, a history of sexual abuse, an upsetting pelvic exam in the past, or relationship troubles can also be at the root of sexual pain.

Some women experience vaginismus - involuntary clenching of vaginal muscles to prevent penetration. Vaginismus is especially common among women who associate the vaginal area with fear or physical trauma.

LUBRICAINE® Highlights

Temporarily relieves external vaginal pain and itching

Medicated with Lidocaine in an all-natural gel to slightly desensitize and ease external vaginal pain and itching. Only to be used in the parts of your vagina that are outside your body, such as your labia and vulva.

Slippery, lubricating gel

Bring the pleasure back to your intimate parts. Dryness in the vaginal area manifests itself with pain and itching. This slippery gel provides lubrication without stickiness.

All natural gel

Gel ingredients are all naturally occurring, none of them are artificial. It is free of harsh chemicals.

Optimal pH

LUBRICAINE® has a pH of 4, the optimal healthy vaginal pH. When your vaginal pH goes awry, odor-causing microorganisms and infections can flourish. Studies show that vaginal issues are more likely to occur when vaginal pH is unbalanced.

Osmotically balanced

LUBRICAINE® has the right concentration of ingredients so that it is very close to the osmotic concentration of plasma. Many products on the market for intimate use are hyper-osmotic which means they have a higher concentration of solutes than the plasma or intercellular fluid. When cells come in contact with hyper-osmotic fluids, water flows out of them and they become dehydrated. Dehydrated tissue does not function properly and is more susceptible to small cracks that are portals for infections. LUBRICAINE is osmotically balanced.

Feels like your own moisture

Replenishes lactic acid, the natural moisturizer produced by the natural microbiome of the vagina. Immediately after application you will feel the area hydrated and supple. It will feel as your very own moisture.

With Cranberry Extract
The natural acidity of cranberry extract contributes to balance the pH of LUBRICAINE. Cranberry extract is traditionally recognized as containing compounds beneficial to the health of the genito-urinary tract. Plus it adds a fresh scent and delicate color to the product.

Free of glycerin, sugars, honey

Simple carbohydrates such as sugars, honey and glycerin are the preferred food source of yeasts and molds. Infections by these microorganisms are very common in women, and produce a lot of discomfort, itchiness, bad odors and vaginal discharge. LUBRICAINE® does not contain any of these, so it does not promote candidiasis, yeast or fungal infections.

All botanical moisturizers

Formulated with soothing and lubricating Organic Aloe Vera, 100% purified Licorice Extract (Dipotassium Glycyrrhetinate); Cranberry Extract and Allantoin (naturally occurring in Comphrey). See all the details under Ingredients.

Water based, non-staining

It is water based and compatible with all condoms and sex toys. Does not stain clothing or bedding.

Free of questionable ingredients

LUBRICAINE® is free of alcohol, propyleneglycol, parabens, hormones, oils, silicones, petrolatum, harsh preservatives, artificial fragrances or dyes, GMO derivatives, PEGs, to name a few. If in doubt, just ask us!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put LUBRICAINE® inside?

Do not insert LUBRICAINE® into your vaginal canal. Only use it on the parts of your vagina that are outside of your body, such as your labia and vulva. Use your finger to rub the cream into the outer areas of your vagina to help soothe and relieve itching. Do not apply LUBRICAINE® to large areas of your body.

Is this a prescription product?

LUBRICAINE® is an over-the-counter product. No prescription is necessary to purchase or use it. However is always a good idea to give your doctor or nurse practitioner a call before using any new medicine.

How strong is the desensitizing?

You may be wondering if using LUBRICAINE® will still allow you to enjoy the wonderful feelings associated with sexual activity. The answer is YES! The desensitizing action is subtle and will not interfere with the normal pleasurable sensations.

Will my partner become numb?

If a small amount rubs off on your partner's penis, it will slightly desensitize him, but it will not numb or deaden sensation. This desensitization may be beneficial in the sense that it will tend to delay ejaculation thereby providing more play time for both.

What is the normal pH of a healthy vagina?

A healthy vaginal pH value is somewhere between 3.8 and 4.5, well into the acidic range (for reference, water is pH 7, which is generally referred to as pH neutral). The source for the acidity of the vagina are the good bacteria living within. They produce lactic acid that reduces the pH value.

LUBRICAINE® has a pH of 4, which is achieved mostly with lactic acid, the same acid that the natural healthy bacteria produce. That is why LUBRICAINE® feels like your own moisture!

Is this product a contraceptive?

No, it has no contraceptive effect.

Does it protect against STDs?

No, this product is not a protectant against STDs. Use your normal methods of protection.

Gel Ingredients in Order of Concentration:

Organic Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract)

Since the time of ancient Egypt, Aloe Vera has been revered as a miraculous topical healing agent that promotes rapid restoration of skin tissue throughout the body. What’s more, Aloe Vera’s smooth and silky texture makes it the perfect complement to your intimate pleasures. Each tube is packed with a lot of Organic Aloe Vera. How much you ask? Each tube is filled with over 80% Aloe.

Cranberry Extract

This extract is infused with the taste of fresh-picked cranberries. Cranberry, as well as many other fruits and vegetables, contains significant amounts of salicylic acid. Scientists believe that this and other ingredients in cranberry juice reduce the ability of bacteria to stick to the lining of the mucosa. This may explain the traditional use of cranberry juice to help maintain the health of the genito-urinary tract. Cranberry juice is acidic (has a low pH) partially caused by its high concentration of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) which is an effective anti-oxidant.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is a naturally occurring alpha hydroxy produced by fermentation of milk and in the muscles during exercise. It is the acid produced by the healthy normal microorganisms that live in the vaginal area and set the pH to the acidic range between 3.8 and 4.5. LUBRICAINE has a balanced pH of 4 and it feels like your own moisture!

Xanthan Gum

A commonly used organic-compliant ingredient that helps to thicken Organic Aloe Vera into a delightful sensual gel. It also helps to add lubricity.

Potassium Sorbate

Used in a small amount to preserve the ingredients natural goodness. It is a natural and food-grade preservative and is approved by Whole Foods Market for use in body-care products.

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate (Licorice Root Extract)

In spite of the difficult to pronounce name, this is a completely natural product extracted and 100% purified from the licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.). It has skin soothing properties helping to reduce irritation and has a natural sweet taste as well.

Stevia and Vanilla Extracts

LUBRICAINE is naturally sweetened, flavored and scented. We use Organic Vanilla Extract to blend with our other ingredients to create a delightful, aromatic scent that adds sensuality to LUBRICAINE use. We also mix in naturally sweet Organic Stevia for just the right blend of delicious enjoyment.

Preservative System Approved for Organic and Natural Products

LUBRICAINE is preserved with a special blend of Benzyl Alcohol plus Dehydroacetic Acid. Benzyl alcohol is a constituent found in many pure essential oils, fruits and teas. Dehydroacetic acid is an organic acid found in the flowers of the solandra species. Together they form an effective preservative that is ECOCERT approved and is recognized as a safe preservation method that supports a natural and organic philosophy. Plus Food Grade Potassium Sorbate for an extra layer of protection.

Allantoin USP

Allantoin occurs naturally in the roots & leaves of the comfrey plant. However, to satisfy market needs Allantoin is produced synthetically (but nature identical). We use the USP grade (Pharmaceutical grade) in LUBRICAINE. Allantoin soothes and alleviates skin-irritations and has moisturizing and hydrating effects.

Citric Acid

Citric acid is a natural alpha and beta hydroxy acid commonly found in fruits and vegetables. It has the ability to chelate (binds and forms complexes) with metals avoiding oxidation and damage to the other ingredients of the product. Also helps boost the efficacy of preservatives.
